Author Matthew Leighninger is Director of the Democracy Workshop and Senior Associate of the Study Circles Resource Center. Leighninger based The Next Form of Democracy in part upon interviews that he conducted with citizens who have organized social and educational programs and civil rights movements in towns and cities nationwide. Interviewees were asked to relate experiences working with elected officials including school boards, city councils, and boards of supervisors. The author also worked with the national office of the League of Women Voters while researching the book.
In The Next Form of Democracy, Leighninger describes six views of citizens and delineates the evolution of democracy from one in which public servants are considered experts and trusted implicitly, to shared, deliberative governance by both citizens’ groups and elected officials.
