In Digging to America, two very different families meet at a Baltimore airport while waiting for the arrival of the children they adopted from Korea. The Donaldsons are loudly American, with banners, video cameras, and baby gear. The Yazdans are a more reserved Iranian-American family. Despite their differences, the families become friends, and each year they hold "Arrival Parties" to commemorate the day at the airport. At these overdone, somewhat awkward gatherings, the families strengthen their ties to one another even as their cultural differences become more apparent. As the years progress and their lives become more intertwined, they are forced to reexamine their values and assumptions about being American.
In its review of the book, Library Journal (April, 2006) notes that Tyler's book is "a touching, well-crafted tale of friendship, families, and what it means to be an American."
