Author Donald Harstad of Elkader will be the featured speaker at the April 28 Friends of Decorah Public Library Annual Meeting. The free program will take place at 7 pm at the library. One need not be a member of the Friends group to attend; everyone is welcome.
Harstad will speak about his writing career, which was inspired by the 26 years he spent working for the Clayton County Sheriff’s Department. During that time he was a patrol officer, Department Intelligence Officer, and eventually Chief Investigator. Harstad draws upon personal experience for many of the characters and situations described in his mystery novels.
Harstad has published five books in the past 10 years including “Eleven Days,” “Known Dead,” “Big Thaw,” “Code 61,” and “A Long December.” “Eleven Days” was nominated for an Anthony Award for Best First Novel in 1998 and sold to Warner Brothers Theatrical Film Division in 2002. Copies of the books are available for check-out at Decorah Public Library.
Harstad’s novels have received rave reviews in publications such as The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Chicago Tribune, Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, and Library Journal.
