Join the Alfheim Fantasy Book Group to discuss Robert Holdstock's World Fantasy Award-Winning title “Mythago Wood” Thursday April 10, 7 pm, at Decorah Public Library (2nd floor Mezzanine Gallery).
Hailed by critics as a classic of the fantasy genre, “Mythago Wood” is a contemporary tale set in post-World War II England. Protagonist Steve Huxley leaves Italy, where he has been recovering from a war wound, to join his brother Christian at their childhood home in the English countryside. The boys’ father has recently died, leaving behind a mysterious legacy of obsession with the nearby Ryhope Wood.
The Huxley brothers discover that the Wood, larger inside than out, is a labyrinth full of myths come to life, “mythagos” that can change you forever. The brothers’ quest for understanding is full of unexpected twists and turns, skillfully crafted using elements of myth, psychology, philosophy, history, and spirituality.
“Mythago Wood” is the first book in a series commonly referred to as the Mythago Cycle or the Ryhope Wood Series. The series includes Lavondyss; The Hollowing; Gate of Ivory, Gate of Horn; and Avilion (to be published November 2008). Holdstock also published “The Bone Forest” and “Merlin’s Wood,” two books containing novellas and short stories related to the Mythago Cycle.
Author Robert Holdstock is an English novelist best known for his works of fantasy literature. His first book was published in 1968. Holdstock has won 3 British Science Fiction Awards and the World Fantasy Award in the category of Best Novel.
