Join the Alfheim Fantasy Book Group to discuss the award-winning title “Wise Child” by Monica Furlong Thursday May 8, 7 pm, at Decorah Public Library (2nd floor Mezzanine Gallery).
“Wise Child” relates the story of a young girl that is taken in by a sorceress after her parents abandon her in a remote Scottish village. The sorceress Juniper teaches Wise Child traditional subjects like English and math in addition to providing her with lessons about herbal lore and magic. When Wise Child’s birth mother reappears in the village, the girl must choose her life’s path: will it be one of ease and luxury with the cold and calculating witch Maeve or a simple life of hard work and poverty with warm, safe Juniper? The danger wrought by village superstitions and a mysterious plague add to Wise Child’s concerns as she struggles to make her way into an unknown future.
Author Monica Furlong (1930-2003) was a British author, journalist, and activist. Many of Furlong’s books reflect a deep interest in religion and spirituality. She is especially noted as a biographer, writing about John Bunyan, Thomas Merton, Alan Watts and Therese of Lisieux. In addition she authored books about the spiritual life of aboriginals, medieval women mystics, and the Church of England.
“Wise Child” is part of Furlong’s popular series of children’s novels set in medieval England, which also includes titles “Juniper” and “Colman.” Furlong’s autobiography was published in 1995.
The Alfheim Fantasy Book Group meets the second Thursday of each month, 7 pm, at Decorah Public Library. All interested readers are invited to attend meetings. For more information, contact Kristin at 382-3717.
