Author Jeffery Skeate will read from and discuss his recently published book Familiar World: Notes Of A Driftless Fly Fisher at 7 p.m. Thursday November 12 on the 2nd floor of Decorah Public Library. Skeate is a resident of Decorah and has fly fished the Driftless Region for seventeen years. He is a regular contributor to Midwest Fly Fishing magazine, and has published essays on fly fishing at Trout Unlimited’s Iowa Driftless Chapter web site www.iadriftless.org. He also has been published extensively in small press literary periodicals as a poet. Familiar World: Notes Of A Driftless Fly Fisher consists of twenty-two essays about fly fishing in the Midwest’s Driftless Region, and each essay is accompanied by a selection of the author’s poetry and photography.
Skeate’s book was originally precipitated by his posted essays at the Trout Unlimited Iowa Driftless Chapter web site, in addition to extensive fly fishing journals he has kept for a number of years. Some of the website articles have been revised and rewritten, though a large portion of the book’s essays are newer compositions. As to the poetry selections complimenting each chapter, Skeate says “In this volume I have included a poem or two, following each small chapter, of my own composition. All of the poems included happen to have been written while residing in our present home in Decorah near the Upper Iowa River, which we moved to some sixteen years ago. I am pleased that these poems have emanated from northeast Iowa and the Driftless Region, and that they might contribute to a sense of place.”
Bill McClain of Sattre Press will appear with Skeate at the Thursday night discussion and reading. A software developer and computer programmer, McClain has published books under the Sattre Press imprint for ten years and is a knowledgeable typographer. He will outline small press book publication and discuss how the idea of publishing a book actually comes to fruition. Further information on Sattre Press and Skeate’s book can be found at www.sattre-press.com.
A book signing will follow the discussion and reading. Skeate is a founding member of the Iowa Driftless Chapter of Trout Unlimited, a national non-profit organization dedicated to the improvement and enhancement of cold-water fisheries throughout the United States. A substantial portion of the evening’s book sale proceeds will be donated to the Iowa Driftless Chapter and will be used specifically for stream habitat improvement projects in northeast Iowa. The Chapter has worked extensively with Fisheries Biologist Bill Kalishek of the Iowa DNR on a number of projects already completed in northeast Iowa, including bank-stabilization efforts on North Bear Creek, South Bear Creek, the Waterloo Creek, French Creek, Trout River and numerous others. The cost of the book is $19.95.
A number of hand-planed split-cane fly rods built by local craftsman and rodmaker Chris Wasta will be available at the library event for viewing.
