Reading Buddies

The Decorah Reads! program is back in action after a short break and needs volunteers for the first session of the 2009-2010 school year. Decorah Reads! is a partnership between Decorah Public Library and Kris Lynch’s 7th grade exploratory reading class. The program matches adult volunteers with 7th grade students for three book discussion meetings. Volunteers make a commitment to attend all of the meetings.

Students choose a fiction book to read and adult volunteers find their student match by selecting a book from the students’ list of titles. As a pair, the volunteer and student both read the book and meet three times to discuss it.

Through the Decorah Reads! program students learn about discussing a book with another person and they also receive encouragement from their adult partner. Adult volunteers have the opportunity to revisit childhood favorites and to nourish their partners’ enjoyment of reading.

Adults may pick books up at the Decorah Public Library beginning Tues. September 22. Meeting dates include Tues. Sept. 29, Tues. Oct. 6, and Tues. Oct 13. The first two meetings will be held at Decorah Public Library from 9:00-9:25 a.m. The final meeting will take place from 8:55-9:30 a.m. at Decorah Middle School.

Please contact Marilyn Rue at Decorah Public Library for more information or to sign up as a volunteer, 563-382-3717 or tutoring@decorah.lib.ia.us.
