Local photographer Lucas Rocksvold is exhibiting a collection of recent photographs entitled “Breath in June” at Decorah Public Library in August and September. A reception for Rocksvold will be held Saturday September 19, 3-4 p.m., on the 2nd floor of the library. The public is invited to come and meet the artist, view the show, and enjoy light refreshments provided by the Decorah Regional Arts Council (DRAC).
Rocksvold describes the collection by saying “In our travels we chance-meet people or places that have energy; a feeling we have within us found outside in nature. I give you these places. The time: June 2009, one solar month of discovery and change. My choice of medium: the 35mm camera. Film brings more life to my photos through shades and depth. Mother Earth created this art; now I bring it to you. Take a ‘Breath in June.’”
When he’s not looking through a viewfinder, Rocksvold can often be found snowboarding or morel mushroom hunting, two activities that allow for the immersion in the natural world that both inspires and informs his photography. Before he got involved in photography ten years ago, Rocksvold painted oil on canvas. Though the medium was different, the inspiration behind it was the same: to capture elements of the earth’s beauty and silence as experienced in natural areas devoid of human influence.
Rocksvold’s photographs have been featured in several Decorah shows during the past year. In the future, he would like to complete more collective pieces and begin to do more writing to accompany his photographs.
