Larry Stone and Jon Stravers will be the featured speakers at the Friends of Decorah Public Library Annual Meeting on Monday April 26 at 7 p.m. in the library’s 2nd floor Mezzanine Gallery.  One need not be a member of the Friends group to attend; the general public is welcome.

Stone and Stravers co-authored a recently published book entitled “Gladys Black: The Legacy of Iowa’s Bird Lady.” According to the authors, “Gladys Black’s newspaper columns showed us the wonder of birds. She also touched countless lives as a teacher, environmentalist, and mentor. This book shares stories from Gladys and from the admirers and adversaries who made her an Iowa conservation legend.”

On the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation’s website, it is prominently noted that Black “spent more than 35 years in Iowa doing volunteer work with birds, identifying bird species in the Red Rock region and writing newspaper columns and books on Iowa birds.”

Black’s newspaper columns about birding appeared in The Des Moines Register from 1969 to 1987 and in three weekly newspapers in Marion County until the week of her death in 1998. Many of these articles were republished in a 1992 book called “Iowa Birdlife,” still in print today.

The Friends of Decorah Public Library will hold a brief fifteen-minute meeting prior to Stone and Stravers’ talk. The meeting will include the Secretary and Treasurer’s reports for the fiscal year (April 2009- March 2010) and the presentation of a special certificate to retiring board member Mary Rodman.  Refreshments will also be served.

The Friends group was created to be a support organization for the Decorah Public Library.  The Friends help raise awareness of the Library in the community, and supports and sponsors many programs within the Library as well as doing work 'behind the scenes' to help make the Library a facility relevant to all the residents of the greater Decorah area.
