Decorah Public Library is hosting a free résumé writing program Wednesday October 6 at 7 pm in the 2nd floor Mezzanine Gallery. Presented by Certified Professional Résumé Writer Trista Brauer of Decorah, the program is open to the public with no registration required.

Brauer explains, “In today’s difficult business environment the creation of a fantastic résumé has become absolutely critical for job seekers. Recruiters and Human Resource Directors spend an average of 15 seconds perusing a résumé before deciding whether to recycle it or continue reading. Even if a résumé lists numerous professional successes and valuable personal attributes, the reader may never get that far if those items aren’t placed in proper context. Professional résumé writing is an art that involves crafting phrases that have the greatest impact in the shortest amount of time.”

Brauer’s presentation will highlight the current dynamics of résumé writing, including the importance of having an updated résumé, professional record keeping, selecting information to include in a résumé, résumé formatting and word choice, creating a cover letter, creating a thank you letter, electronic formatting, résumé submission, and the use of social networking sites. There will also be time for a question and answer session following the presentation.

Trista Brauer recently relocated to Decorah from Rochester, Minnesota with her family. Brauer became a Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW) through the Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches and launched the website www.quantifiedresumes.com in early spring 2010. Her professional background includes working in Human Resources as a contract employee for a retail recruiter, Employee Relations for Dodge County, the Continuing Medical Education Department and the Human Resources Department at Mayo Clinic, and management experience at both Lands’ End and Target. She holds a B.S. in Retail Management and Merchandising from University of Wisconsin- Stout.
