Dennis Ruen is exhibiting a collection of acrylic paintings at Decorah Public Library in December and January. A reception for Ruen will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday January 12 on the 2nd floor of the library. The public is invited to come and meet the artist, see the show, and enjoy refreshments provided by the Decorah Regional Arts Council (DRAC).
“The collection is entitled 'Winter Art on the Upper Iowa.’ For this particular collection, the darker days of Iowa winter, after the holidays, can sometimes draw a fun painting out of me,” Ruen explains. “My art lets me escape in moments of concentration and focus when I spend hours just getting the little details right. An image in my mind moving onto the canvas can help to transcend those ‘book I never wrote, seeds I never planted’ feelings. My art comes from memorable events and colorful scenes that randomly inspire me. My six- to eight-color collection of acrylic paintings are derived from whatever my hand and eye are able to connect on. I have worked in construction for most of my life, and really began painting as a hobby in the early 1990s. Over the years I started to become more free with my hobby and now view it more as more of a career. My art has now allowed me opportunities to transfer some of my construction experience to my art by building my own frames, which I view as a part of my creative offering. I have always enjoyed the art walks and art shows in Northeast Iowa. The Iowa Artists shows have brought me to some great local places which I have often found further inspiration from. When it comes down to it, sometimes a painting is the only entertainment on the wall.”
The Decorah Public Library Mezzanine Gallery has been a joint project of the Decorah Public Library and the Decorah Area Regional Arts Council (DRAC) since 1998. The Gallery is open to the public Monday-Thursday 10 am-8 pm, Friday and Saturday 10 am-5 pm, and Sunday 1-4 pm.
