The Friends of Decorah Public Library will hold the 2011 Annual Meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday April 25 in the 2nd floor Mezzanine Gallery. Following a brief business meeting, the Friends’ guest speaker will be Amy Weldon, an Associate Professor of English at Luther College. Weldon’s talk is entitled “Good Writing, Bad Writing: How You Can Tell and Why You Should Care.”
Weldon is a native Alabamian. Her essay “The Odd Girls: Flannery O’Connor and Me” won the Bevel Summers Award for Best of Issue and the Thomas H. Carter Prize for the Essay from Shenandoah in 2010. Some of her other short fiction and essays have appeared in The Carolina Quarterly, Story Quarterly, Southern Cultures, North Carolina Literary Review, Yemassee, and The South Carolina Review. She has recently completed a novel, Eldorado, Iowa, and she has weekly meditations on money, life, and spirit on her blog, http://www.cheapskateintellectual.wordpress.com.
The Friends group was created to be a support organization for the Decorah Public Library. The Friends help raise awareness of the Library in the community, and supports and sponsors many programs within the Library as well as doing work 'behind the scenes' to help make the Library a facility relevant to all the residents of the greater Decorah area. Come and join your “Friends” for an interesting evening at the library. The meeting is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
