“The Magic of Really Old Stuff:
Fossils, Native American Artifacts and Talking Stones”:
an afterschool adventure excursion into the past,
for young people age 9 and up, including adults.
Come meet Dave Stevenson, a remarkable person who seems to be a magnet for hidden treasures of the past. It’s almost as if they are looking for him! A lifetime resident of the Decorah area, he has an extensive collection of rocks, agates and fossils and Indian artifacts, formed by nature over thousands or millions of years or left by native people. He loves nothing more than to go out searching for more of them so he can show them to others. He will be sharing a variety of things from his personal collection of “finds” here at the library. Each one has a story to tell, which Dave will bring forth, plus he can give you some advice on where and how to look for really old magical stuff for yourself.
How would you know if a rock contains a fossil? If it’s not obvious on the outside, well then, take a peek inside. This will be your opportunity to split some rocks and see what they might be hiding. Some rocks are just too cool to leave in a box. Dave’s collecting partner, Todd Hoeg, makes pretty neat jewelry from old treasures, and will share some examples of his craft. Someday then, you may be able to practice making your own. There will be a good selection of books for you about Iowa fossils and rocks, and historical fiction books for young people about native American life.
