The first meeting of Quilt Club scheduled for earlier this month had to be postponed due to staff illness. A new date of Monday, January 30th has been set. The free session, part of Decorah Public Library’s YourSpace after school programs, will run from 3:15 to 5:00.
“Quilt Club” is a way to get started on a small, handmade quilt project that can be worked on as desired on over the course of the winter. In this first session participants will choose a simple pattern for a small quilt, get fabric pieces cut out and learn a basic stitch for hand piecing. Then, each person will have a storage place for their project so that it can worked on in the library any time they choose. This could include any day Monday-Thursday after school, including during YourSpace programs. All materials will be provided, however, if quilters have special fabrics they would like to use, they are welcome to bring them along to the first session. They must be light weight cottons and pre-washed.
When the quilts are all pieced together, sewers will get help to prepare their pieced tops for "tying" to the batting and backing. After that, each can choose whether to keep the quilt, or donate it to a needy family, here or abroad. Quilt Club may not be a good choice for someone who does not expect to be spending regular time (once a week, at least) at the library afterschool. Those not interested in the sewing project are welcome to come anyway to play some board games, work on a different craft project or just hang out with others, in the downstairs meeting room of the library.
