Come to Decorah Public Library on Monday September 24 at 7 pm to discuss “Rebuild the Dream” by former Obama White House staffer Van Jones. The discussion will be co-facilitated by Lyle Otte and Craig Mosher. Books are currently available for check-out at the front desk of the library.
The American Dream has different meanings to people, but the central belief is that anyone who is willing to work hard and follow the rules ought to be able to get a good job, get ahead financially and retire with security. “Rebuild the Dream” deals with the fear that that dream is fading for too many Americans and how people are working to make the dream real again. Jones critiques the Obama campaign in 2008 and some of Obama's policies and styles of governing. He compares them to strategies used by the Tea Party and the Occupy movements, raising interesting questions about how citizens can best work to influence government actions and law-making. Do you agree with Jones? Disagree with him? What can we in Decorah do to Rebuild the Dream?
Co-facilitator Lyle Otte is the volunteer coordinator for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) at the Decorah Public Library. Prior to that, he was a teacher of Social Studies in Postville High School for 33 years. He has undergraduate and graduate degrees in Political Science. Lyle has been active throughout his career in the Democratic Party.
Co-facilitator Craig Mosher is a long-time student of American political campaigns and teaches community organizing, policy-making, and legislative lobbying in the Social Work Program at Luther College.
