The Decorah Public Library history book group will discuss H.W. Brands’ “Andrew Jackson: His Life and Times” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday June 27 at Decorah Public Library. Copies of the book are available for check-out at the front desk of the library.
Brands’ book recounts the extraordinary story of Andrew Jackson- the colorful, dynamic, and forceful president who ushered in the Age of Democracy and set a still young America on its path to greatness- told by the bestselling author of “The First American.”
With the sweep, passion, and attention to detail that made “The First American” a Pulitzer Prize finalist and a national bestseller, Brands shapes a historical narrative that’s as fast-paced and compelling as the best fiction. He follows Jackson from his days as a rebellious youth to his years as a young lawyer and congressman from the newly settled frontier state of Tennessee to his time as general of the Tennessee militia. But it was Jackson’s contributions as President that won him a place in the pantheon of America’s greatest leaders: a man of the people, without the formal education or the family lineage of the Founding Fathers, he sought to make the country a genuine democracy, governed by and for the people.
The history book group meets at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month; meetings are open to the public. Call Kristin at 563-382-3717 with questions.
