Decorah Public Library will host “Incredible Bats!” Tuesday, June 25 at 1:00-1:45 as part of the children’s summer reading program, “Dig Into Reading!” Sharon Peterson, elementary school teacher/librarian will bring live Egyptian fruit bats and African straw-colored fruit bats for a presentation that will teach and inform the audience about the many benefits of this often misunderstood and feared creature. Sharon will use PowerPoint with images, echolocation calls and a short video clip showing bats eating a variety of foods. At the conclusion of the PowerPoint, Sharon will introduce her audience to a live fruit bat with a time for questions. Sharon, who has been promoting bat education for 15 years, has been trained by Bat Conservation International in the conservation of bats.
The children’s summer reading program is a 5 week long program starting June 10 that promotes summer reading for children aged 3-10 years. Once the reading goal of 15 hours has been reached, children receive a free library T-shirt sponsored by the Friends of the Decorah Public Library and free food coupons from McDonald’s, Pizza Hut and Pizza Ranch. Reading programs, activities and entertainment are scheduled each week.
