Decorah Public Library will host Mad Science of Iowa with Jim Birkel Wednesday, June 12th at 3:00-3:45 in the lower level public meeting room as part of the children’s summer reading program, “Dig Into Reading!”
Mad Science of Iowa delivers unique, hands-on science experiences for children that are as entertaining as they are educational. Jim Birkel, the mad scientist who presents the program, will be connecting each of his experiments to the phrases: “Dig”, “Beneath the Surface”, or “Groudbreaking.” The experiments will draw from: earth layer cake, metal detector discoveries, soggy soil, soil science challenge, stalactites & stalagmites, tectonic plates & earthquakes, underground creatures, and volcanoes-both lava and steam. The kid volunteers will get all wrapped up, locate unique metal items, grow objects inside a cave, create their own earthquake, learn about underground critters in a very cute way, and create unique volcanoes.
The children’s summer reading program is a 5 week long program starting June 10th that promotes summer reading for children aged 3-10 years. Once the reading goal of 15 hours has been reached, children receive a free library T-shirt sponsored by the Friends of the Decorah Public Library and free food coupons from McDonald’s, Pizza Hut and Pizza Ranch. Reading programs, activities and entertainment are scheduled each week.
