Come to Decorah Public Library at 7 p.m. Monday May 13 to see the film “The Price of Sand: A Documentary about Silica Sand, Small Towns, and Money.” The film screening is sponsored and hosted by the Winneshiek County Protectors.
Directed by filmmaker Jim Tittle of St. Paul, Minnesota, the 60-minute documentary examines the frac sand mining boom in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Due to a rapid increase in demand, pure silica sand has become a valuable commodity, and mines are opening at a rapid rate. Silica sandstone is found in Winneshiek County and the Winneshiek County Protectors seek to ensure the preservation of the human-made resources like roads and bridges, as well as the natural resources like the beautiful bluffs and valleys, rivers and streams and groundwater.
