“What kind of house does a man who has lived in a six-foot-by-nine-foot cell for over 30 years dream of?”
This is the question that a Stanford University art student Jackie Sumell asked Herman Wallace, who had been in solitary confinement in a Louisiana prison for the greater part of his life. Come watch a documentary film about the unlikely friendship between a New York artist and one of America’s most famous inmates as they collaborate on a famous art project. The film explores the injustice of solitary confinement and the power of art to transform people’s lives. We will talk about the idea of punishment and service to others, even those who have been “banished” to prison life. This is a remarkable and moving story, with many surprises.
