The public is invited to attend a reception for Decorah High School artists and their instructor, Elizabeth Lorentzen, at Decorah Public Library between 6:00 and 7:30 pm on Thursday October 17. The reception will be held in the Library’s 2nd floor Mezzanine Gallery, where students’ work will be on display Oct. 4-Nov. 1.  The display is a joint project of the Driftless Art Collective and Decorah Public Library.

All pieces are original 2012-2013 ink on paper. Artists include: Faith Vilardo, Charlie Baldwin, Emily Gomersall, Olivia Heier, Maddie Grimm, Lydia Hayes, Oran Deen-Lester, Aubrey Mitchell, Sam Iverson, Mackenzie Schaeffer, Madi Sparrow, Kendra Larsen, Darbie Dennis, Clara Kittelson, and Annalise Johnson.

Lorentzen says “Since the founding of our town in 1849, the face of Decorah has continually changed. Log and stone construction in the beginning gave way to frame and brick, building styles reflected the tradition and taste of the owner’s point of origin, as well as what was currently in vogue. Time and resources of the builder and owner dictated the simplicity or high style of the structure. Decorah is blessed with a myriad of styles. A walk down our streets represents a stroll through history.

While examples of past architecture are in evidence in most areas, some representative examples have been lost or are in danger of being lost. This exhibition presents historic architecture still in evidence, structures that no longer exist and some that can still be preserved.”

The Decorah High School 2-Dimensional class drew these pen and ink drawings for their 20th annual calendar. A special thank you to community members lending historic photos so that students had accurate information to inspire their drawings.

Anyone interested in purchasing a calendar or any of the works as archival prints, or any artist or organization interested in displaying work in the Mezzanine Gallery should contact Sarah Frydenlund at or 563-419-9118.
