At the end of the harvest season, when seeds are collected for next year’s gardens, is a good time to share the still-fresh stories about what grew well and produced bountifully. That is why Decorah Public Library, in partnership with Seed Saver’s Exchange, will be offering an evening Seed Swap on Tuesday, October 29th, from 6-8 pm.
The event is open to anyone interested in gardening, seeds and sharing them and one needn't have some to swap to attend. Featured will be space to display and offer your seeds; information about seed saving and storage; a seed donation box for the DPL Seed Library, books to browse; a gardening and seed saving tips board; seed envelope making from re-purposed materials; possibly some seedy music; door prizes and refreshments.
Vegetable, flower and herb seeds are all acceptable, however, only open-pollinated, non-hybrid varieties seven years old or less and stored in a cool, dry location, are requested, please. Seeds can be brought in a bulk container and shared in desired quantities in envelopes available at the swap, or prepackaged. Please come prepared with information about the seeds’ source and year of harvest, whether from your own garden or purchased seeds. (If you purchased the seeds, the original packet will say something like “Packaged for” or “Grown for” and then the year. This means the seeds were harvested the previous growing season.) Feel free to bring along photos and any growing tips or other information that may be useful to others.
