Banned Books Week 2013 is celebrating more than thirty years of the freedom to read. This freedom, not only to choose what to read, but also to select from a full array of possibilities, is firmly rooted in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community: librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas.

In celebration of the freedom to read, Decorah Community Schools, Decorah Public Library, Dragonfly Books, Upstart Crow Theatreworks, and the Preus Library at Luther College are joining forces with Tanya Gertz and the Luther College Center Stage Series to promote community book discussions about Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” between now and February 2014.

On February 21, 2014 the Aquila Theatre will be presenting Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury's dystopian tale of a bleak future where books are banned and knowledge is on the edge of extinction. With its skill at creating innovative and modern productions of great works of literature, the Aquila Theatre uses a minimal set and high-caliber performers to breathe new life into this visionary parable of a society gone awry.

Sets of book discussion books will be available for local book groups to check out at the Decorah Public Library. The Library will also screen the film adaptation in January or early February.

Call the Library at 382-3717 for more information or to reserve books for a book discussion group.
