The Decorah Public Library history book group will discuss Dan Jones’ The Plantagenets: Warrior Kings and Queens Who Made England at 6:30 p.m. Thursday Sept. 26 on the 2nd floor of the library.
They may lack the glamour of the Tudors or the majesty of the Victorians, but in Jones’ latest book, the Plantagenets are just as essential to the foundation of modern Britain. As he chronicles the entire dynasty, beginning with Geoffrey of Anjou, familiar figures emerge. Of course, there’s the recklessly brave Lionheart and the incomparably inept John, but Jones devotes ample time to the forces at work that shaped the kingdom.
Booklist Reviewer James Orbesen remarks that The Plantagenets is written “with prose that keeps the reader captivated throughout accounts of the span of centuries and the not-always-glorious trials of kingship; [it] is at all times approachable, academic, and entertaining.”
Participants may wish to purchase the book; copies are not widely available through interlibrary loan.
The history book group meets at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month; meetings are open to the public. Upcoming discussion titles include Millard’s “Destiny of the Republic” for the Thurs. Oct. 24 meeting and “The Monuments Men” for the Mon. Nov. 25 meeting (note date change due to Thanksgiving holiday). Call Kristin at 563-382-3717 with questions.
