“Ocimum basilicum, Calendula officinalis!” Sounds like a Harry Potter incantation for a spell, doesn’t it?
Well, you’re almost right, because these words are the names of two very, very powerful and magical plants, and at this time of year, we’re still lucky enough to be able to do magical things with them. This session of YourSpace will be packed with hands-on things for you to do and great stuff to eat. We will learn about the culinary and medicinal properties of Sweet Basil and Calendula, both of which can be found in gardens all around here. Be prepared to make several Basil “potions”, including, pesto, tea, vinegars and, can you believe it, eat Basil ice cream! Calendula, named by an international crew of judges, was named the Herb of the Year in 2008, and not only tastes good (like vanilla), but cures all sorts of skin ailments as well. We will enjoy calendula cookies (baked in the solar oven if it’s sunny, and dye some fabric with it for a later project.
