Library Board Announces New Director

The Decorah Public Library Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Kristin Torresdal has been hired as the new Library Director. Since 2005, Torresdal has served as the Library’s Administrative Coordinator, a role that has allowed her to develop expertise in many different aspects of library work. “Kristin brings a deep and thorough knowledge of library operations, programming, and community outreach to her new role as Director,” stated Library Board President Andrea Beckendorf. “The Board was impressed with her vision for the library in the community and her understanding of the role the library plays for a wide range of community members.”

Beckendorf indicated that the process for selecting a new Library Director began last fall, with board planning and brainstorming about the type of leadership that would continue the level of services currently offered by the Library. “We were looking for someone who would be dynamic, creative, and collaborative in carrying out the day-to-day work of the Library. Kristin’s demonstrated record of having brought those qualities to her current position and her enthusiasm for working with Library staff and patrons aligned with what we were looking for in a Library Director.” In addition to the Library Board of Trustees, members of the Library staff, Friends of the Library Board, and City Manager Chad Bird also participated in the search process.

Torresdal has nearly 20 years of experience in libraries, and has completed Level V library director certification through the State Library of Iowa, a step beyond what was required for the position. Beckendorf stated: “It is important for a library director to be aware of changing laws, trends in library services, and best practices, and since we have a history of the Director working closely with the Library Board, continuing education is an important part of that conversation.”

Beckendorf added: “The Library Board is excited to see where we will go under Kristin’s leadership, and we are pleased that she highly values continued collaboration with the Library Board, Friends of the Library, and the city of Decorah.” Torresdal is expected to begin her new role July 3.
